Recognizing citations in .doc and .pdf files

I'm trying to use zotero to recognize and extract citations in existing word documents and .pdf files.

I'm attempting to compile a bibliography using sources that have been cited at the end of a scholarly article. Rather than copying and pasting each citation into zotero, my hope is that zotero will recognize these citations and offer to add them to my bibliography with a few mouse clicks. This might be unrealistic, but I wanted to find out if it was possible before giving up on it and typing in the citations by hand.

I've installed the Word plug-in but it seems to me like all it can do is insert citations from an existing zotero bibliography (a useful tool for many, I'm sure, but not what I'm looking for at this point).

Please let me know if there's any way for zotero to recognize and extract citation information from a word .doc, a .pdf, or even an html file. Thanks.
