This is a very basic question-- sorry.

Zotero is fantastic for almost everything, but I find that to get the flexibility I need, I still need to use endnote to put citations into a word doc.

I do all my collecting and organizing on zotero. But as far as I can tell there is no way to export a subset of the library on zotero, i.e. only the references in a specific collection. I end up exporting 5000 references when I only need 50. Is there a way around this?

First, did you know that there is a plug-in for Word that allows you to insert citations and bibliographies directly into your documents? More information can be found here. Maybe you aren't using this plug-in due to concerns about flexibility that you mentioned.

To export a subset of references, you can right click on the collections folder that contains the desired references and then choose "Export Collection..." or "Create Bibliography from Selection..." The file (or clipboard content) that results from this operation should contain only the items in the collection folder.

It's also possible choose one or more items in the Zotero middle pane and do the same thing: right-click and export or create bibliography from the selected items(s).
