How to enter collected editions and their articles

Hello,

in Germany, I'm used to cite articles out of collected editions - so called "Sammelwerke". The "Sammelwerk" is cited like any other book, but instead of an author, their is an editor. A reference of a collected edition looks e.g. like this: "Surname, Name (Hrsg.): Title of collected. City 1977" The "Hrsg." is the abbreviation for Editor (German: Herausgeber).

Now, when you cite a single article out of this collection, it looks like this:

"Surname, Name: Title of the Article. In: Surname, Name (Hrsg.): Title of Collected Edition. City 1977, pp 230-240"

If the author of the article and the editor are the same person, your are allowed to solve this by abbreviations. But more often, author and editor are different people.

Zotero is a great tool. I'm waiting for something like it since years. Confusingly, citing articles from collected editions is a very common application. How do I have to use Zotero properly in this case?

Thank You in advance for a short description or for links where I can find a tutorial about that field.

Yours, Florian
  • Thank you very much for that speedy answer! I wouldn't have found out on my own.

This question pops up so often: wouldn't it help if when one selects as item type "book section" TWO author fields are automatically created, one of them already labeled/switched to "editor"?
This would also make entering references easier, since in the case of a "book section" one has by definition to trigger an additional author, and change it to editor. This would save one or two clicks.
  • that's a great idea migugg, I'd strongly second that.
  • The software "literat" and its successor "citavi", which is widespread in Germany, solves the problem like this: In a first step, you file the collected edition. Then, in a second step, you can choose the collected edition from a drop down menu when filing a certain booksection or article. If you have to file many booksection of the same book, this saves a lot of time. In Zotero, something like this already exists at the tab "Related". Perhaps, the developers of Zotero could add the already made function"Related" as a drop down menu in case of booksections to select the related booktitle of the collected edition. "Literat" and "citavi" have shown that something like this is logic and sensemaking.
